How to Prepare for a Parts Sourcing Call: A Quick Checklist

A few minutes of preparation makes a parts call faster and more accurate. Use this checklist before you call.

Your vehicle

• Year, make, and model — for example, 2017 Ford F-150
• Trim — for example, XLT or Lariat
• Engine — size and type, such as 3.5L V6 or 5.0L V8
• Drivetrain — 2WD, 4WD, or AWD
• Body details — cab style and bed length for trucks; sedan, coupe, or hatchback for cars
• VIN — the 17-character vehicle identification number

Your VIN is on the lower driver-side corner of the windshield, the driver door-jamb label, and your registration or insurance card.

The part

• What it is — the part name, or a description of where it is and what it does
• Position — front or rear, driver or passenger, upper or lower
• Part number — from the old part, if you can read it
• Features — for example, a mirror with a camera, heat, and a turn signal
• Photos — ready to email if the part is hard to describe

Your preferences

• OEM, aftermarket, or no preference
• What matters most — exact match, budget, or getting the part as soon as possible
• Ship-to ZIP code — helpful for shipping and for emissions-related parts

Questions worth asking

• Is this part OEM or aftermarket? New, remanufactured, or used?
• What warranty applies to this part?
• What is the typical shipping time to my area?
• What is the return policy?
• Is there anything else I should replace at the same time?
