What are OEM parts?
OEM — Original Equipment Manufacturer — parts are made by or for your vehicle’s manufacturer to the same specifications as the parts your vehicle was built with. When you replace a part with OEM, you are generally getting the same design, dimensions, and materials as the original.
Terminology varies across the industry. “Genuine” parts are usually sold under the vehicle maker’s own brand, while “OEM” is also used for parts made by the original supplier and sold under that supplier’s name. When we source a part for you, ask us exactly which kind it is.
When OEM is worth considering
- Fit-critical parts such as body panels, trim, and some sensors, where a precise factory fit matters.
- Electronics and modules that need to match your vehicle’s exact part number and configuration.
- Newer vehicles where aftermarket options may not be available yet.
- Personal preference — some owners simply want the same part the vehicle came with.
OEM vs. aftermarket at a glance
| Feature | OEM | Aftermarket |
|---|---|---|
| Design | Made to the vehicle maker’s original specifications | Designed by independent manufacturers to fit and function like the original |
| Cost | Often higher | Often lower, varies by brand |
| Choice | Usually one option per part number | Often several brands and quality levels |
| Availability | Can be limited for older or discontinued vehicles | Often available for popular older vehicles |
These are general tendencies, not rules — quality and price vary by part and brand. Read our guide to OEM vs. aftermarket parts or compare with aftermarket options.

FAQ
OEM parts: common questions
What does OEM mean?
OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. OEM parts are made by or for the vehicle manufacturer to the same specifications as the parts your vehicle was built with.
Are OEM and “genuine” parts the same thing?
The terms are used loosely. “Genuine” usually means parts sold under the vehicle manufacturer’s own brand, while “OEM” is also used for parts made by the original supplier and sold under that supplier’s brand. Ask us exactly what you are getting for your request.
Can you always find an OEM part?
Not always. Some OEM parts are back-ordered or discontinued, especially for older vehicles. If an OEM part is not available, we can tell you whether an aftermarket alternative may be.
Is Rock Sales Parts a dealership?
No. Rock Sales Parts is an independent parts sourcing business and is not a franchised dealer for, or affiliated with, any vehicle manufacturer.
Why do you need my VIN for OEM parts?
Manufacturers often use different part numbers for the same component depending on options and production dates. Your VIN helps narrow it to the right one.
