Parts Explained

Common Engine Replacement Parts and How to Order Them

Sensors, ignition coils, gaskets, timing parts, belts, mounts, and complete engines — common engine parts and the details you need to order them.

Engine repairs range from a quick sensor swap to replacing the entire engine. Whatever the job, engine parts are among the most fitment-sensitive parts on a vehicle. Here are the most common categories and what to know before you order.

Sensors

Modern engines rely on sensors to run properly. Common ones include:

  • Crankshaft and camshaft position sensors, which tell the engine computer where the engine is in its rotation
  • Oxygen (O2) sensors, which monitor exhaust to help manage fuel mixture
  • Mass airflow (MAF) sensors, which measure incoming air
  • Coolant temperature sensors
  • Knock sensors and oil pressure sensors

A check-engine light code points to a system or circuit, not always to a specific failed part. Have the code diagnosed before buying a sensor.

Ignition parts

  • Ignition coils supply high voltage to the spark plugs. Many engines use one coil per cylinder.
  • Spark plugs and, on older vehicles, plug wires and distributors.

Gaskets and seals

Gaskets seal the joints between engine parts. Common replacements include valve cover gaskets, oil pan gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, and head gaskets. Some jobs call for a complete gasket set.

Timing components

Depending on the engine, the camshafts are driven by a timing belt or a timing chain, along with tensioners, guides, and sometimes the water pump. Timing parts are often replaced together as a kit.

Belts, pulleys, and mounts

  • Serpentine belts, idler pulleys, and tensioners drive accessories like the alternator and A/C compressor.
  • Engine mounts hold the engine in place and absorb vibration.

The water pump and thermostat keep the engine at the right temperature. See our cooling system parts page for radiators, hoses, and fans.

Complete engines and long blocks

When an engine is beyond repair, replacement options can include a complete engine or a long block (typically the block and cylinder heads assembled, without many external accessories). What is included varies, so always confirm before buying.

The details that matter for engine parts

  • Engine size and type, such as 2.0L turbo four-cylinder or 5.3L V8
  • Engine code, which on many vehicles is encoded in the VIN
  • Your VIN, which confirms the exact engine your vehicle was built with
  • Part number from the original part, if available
  • Emissions label information from under the hood, for emissions-related parts
  • Mileage, when looking for a complete engine
